Chiasm

    • NT - Nestle Aland (우리가 쓰는 성경 원문)
    • Philip Shaff

BioLogos의 '진화란 무엇인가' (What is evolution?)

What is evolution?

BioLogos promotes “evolutionary creation,” the view that all the lifeforms on earth came about by the God-ordained process of evolution with common descent.
The word evolution can be used in many ways, but in biology, it means descent with modification.
In other words, small modifications occur at the genetic level (i.e. in DNA) when a new generation descends from its parents.
Over many generations these modifications can result in significant differences from the ancestral population.
When those differences are beneficial for survival, they can work their way through a whole population of organisms, and if the differences are substantial enough, scientists may recognize those organisms as a different species from their ancestors.

The theory of evolution makes no attempt to explain the origin of the first life which appeared on earth about 3.85 billion years ago.
It explains the development and diversification of all life—including humans—after that in a “family tree” of species through common descent.
Common descent is supported by multiple independent lines of evidence, most notably the fossil record, the geographical distribution of species, and the comparison of the genomes of many species.

A number of common misconceptions have led to confusion or suspicion about evolution over the years.
Some people object that no one has observed one species suddenly becoming another, such as a cat giving birth to a dog.
The truth is that such a sudden transition is not predicted by the theory of evolution.
Evolution of new forms—what some people call “macroevolution”—takes a very, very long time, as small variations add up over millions of years.
Humans have only been studying these changes for several hundred years, and so could not witness such major transitions.
But we have seen smaller transitions in this timeframe, including the formation of new species, and the evidence left from the past shows clearly that major transitions have occurred.

Next, the claim that humans share common ancestry with other species does not mean that humans have evolved from any other presently existing species.
Humans do share many genes with other living primates, but we are not their descendants.
Humans and chimpanzees both descended from a common ancestor who lived about 6 million years ago, and the other primates have been changing over this time.
Our ancestry does not determine who we are (as image-bearers of God), but simply speaks of the genetic “dust” from which we were formed.

A third misconception is that evolution is a random, purposeless process.
It is true that individual mutations of the genetic code appear random from the perspective of science, in the sense that they are unpredictable.
But “unpredictable” does not mean “purposeless,” and elements of randomness might have important purposes.
Consider a video game, where the game designer intentionally includes random elements to create a richer experience.
A Christian can view God’s governance of the evolutionary process as a similar use of “intentional randomness.”
And then there are other elements of the evolutionary process that are not at all random, like the selection of positive variations that increase fitness.
Whether the process as a whole is purposeless is not a scientific question.
At BioLogos we believe that God intentionally created human beings, and did so through evolution.

There are many debates among evolutionary scholars about the details of the process, but common ancestry through evolution is firmly established as the general framework.
At BioLogos, we believe that the theory of evolution is the best scientific description of the means by which God has accomplished his praiseworthy purposes of bringing forth life, with humanity as the pinnacle and focus of his creative work.

Are science and Christianity at war?

In a Nutshell

요약

Some people see science and religion as enemies, at war for leadership in our modern culture.
Others see science and religion as completely separate and unrelated facets of life.
However, science is not the only source of facts, and religion reaches beyond the realm of values and morals.
In fact, religion can have a positive impact on science, such as in the development of modern medical ethics.
Many early scientific leaders were devout Christians, as are some scientific leaders today.
Science can also enhance the spiritual life of believers.
Christians rejoice in scientific discoveries that reveal the glory of God the creator.

Introduction

서론

Many voices today say that science and Christianity are opposed to each other.
Some atheists claim that science has debunked religion and superstition of all forms.
Many in the general public think that the church is anti-science.
And within the church, science is often portrayed as challenging important Christian beliefs.
None of these voices, however, hint at the positive and fruitful relationship between Christianity and science.
Here we review several ways to view the relationship between science and Christianity.

Are Christianity and science at war?

When creation and evolution clash in a courtroom, the daily news fills up with stories suggesting that there is some profound conflict between science and Christianity.
Inevitably, someone mentions the historical incident of Galileo. Galileo was charged with heresy by the church in 1633 for teaching that the Earth orbits the Sun.
From Galileo to textbook battles, the hasty conclusion is that science and Christianity are engaged in an endless debate, fundamentally opposed to each other.

Yet the Galileo incident and today’s conflicts are often about much more than the particular claims of science or faith. Personalities, politics, and culture wars all come into play when drawing the battle lines.
In many instances, science and scientists are not themselves in conflict with Christian belief.
In fact, Galileo himself was a Christian who believed “that the glory and greatness of Almighty God are marvelously discerned in all His works and divinely read in the open book of Heaven”
Many scientists then and now are Christians who see no conflict between their scientific work and their faith.
Most things studied via the natural sciences—such as the migration patterns of birds or the interior of atoms—do not raise any theological or Biblical concerns.

The “warfare” model, then, is not very helpful for understanding evolution and Christianity, since it assumes conflict from the start.
A few particular areas of scientific study—like the big bang and evolution—do raise concerns for Christians, but most of the BioLogos website (see Questions by Category on the right) is devoted to showing that evolution and Christianity are not truly at war.
In the rest of this answer, we’ll explore other models for the working relationship between science and Christianity.

Are Christianity and science completely separate?

One way to erase the conflicts between science and Christianity is to view them as entirely separate endeavors, with different purposes, methods, and bodies of knowledge.
This view emphasizes that science is a system of knowledge about the world and its behavior, whereas religion is about morality, God, and the afterlife.
Thus, Christianity and science cannot conflict, because they are addressing different sorts of questions.

This model has some weaknesses (see below), but it does help us understand some important aspects of the relationship.
Many apparent conflicts between science and religion occur because of a lack of understanding of the fundamental differences between the two.
When someone claims that the Bible answers a scientific question, and another claims that science answers a question about God, the conflict immediately flares up.
Many conflicts become enflamed because participants forget that Christianity and science do generally address very different questions.

This model also reminds us that science is not the only source of knowledge.
There are many sorts of questions that simply do not fall under the domain of science.
Borrowing an example from the Rev. John Polkinghorne, there is more than one answer to the question of “Why is the water boiling in the tea kettle?”
Rev. John Plkinghorne
The scientific answer might be “the water is boiling because at this temperature it undergoes a phase transition from liquid to vapor.”
Another acceptable, though nonscientific, answer is “the water is boiling because I put the kettle on the stove.”
A third answer might be “the water is boiling because my prayer partner is coming over for tea.”
None of the answers is wrong; rather, each gives a different perspective on the question.
The scientific answer does not tell the whole story.
Science cannot answer questions like “Is my friend trustworthy?” or “Is this poem well written?”
Science is tremendously successful in understanding the physical world, but we should not let that tempt us to think it can be used to understand everything in life.

Science cannot answer the question “Does God exist?”
Some people argue that God’s existence is actually a scientific claim that could be tested like a chemical reaction.
But science studies the natural world, not the supernatural.
No amount of scientific testing or theorizing could prove or disprove the existence of a supernatural creator.
The claim that “God exists” is a metaphysical one, not a claim about nature or physical laws

This model also reminds us that the Bible is not the only source of knowledge.
The Bible is silent on most of the topics that concern scientists, like protons, photosynthesis, penguins, and Pluto.
The Bible is not a science textbook, in the same way that it is not a textbook of plumbing, agriculture, or economics.
Instead, God teaches us about these things through his general revelation in the created order.

However, this model has some significant weaknesses.
It isolates religion from science, which can be a first step in marginalizing religion from public discourse.
By defining religion and science as separate, this model doesn’t help us understand the interactions they do have, either negative or positive.
The model also sets science on its own, apart from religion, while Christians believe that no part of our lives is outside of our walk with God.

Science and Christianity interact, correcting and enhancing each other

While many questions can be clearly categorized as “science” questions or as “Bible” questions, other questions are on the boundary.
For topics like evolution, medical ethics, and climate change, we need to consider both science and faith when seeking out God’s truth.
For such complex questions, we need all the knowledge and wisdom we can get, rather than handicapping ourselves by looking only to science or only to the Bible.
If we look to only one or the other, we will get a distorted view of the issue. As Pope John Paul II wrote,

Science can purify religion from error and superstition; religion can purify science from idolatry and false absolutes.
Each can draw the other into a wider world, a world in which both can flourish.
God reveals himself in the book of Scripture and the book of Nature.
To learn more about God and his work, we study both books.
When one book is confusing or ambiguous, insights from the other book can help us understand it.
In both revelations, we look for the underlying truth of who God is and how he made the world.
Rev John Polkinghorne wrote, “Science and theology have things to say to each other, since both are concerned with the search for truth attained through motivated belief.”
Rev John Polkinghorn

Faith can have a positive impact on science by guiding the practical application of scientific discoveries.
With the rapid advance of science and technology, many ethical questions are facing our society.
Development of safe nuclear energy is not far from the development of nuclear weapons, new medical imaging techniques save lives but are too expensive for the poor, and DNA testing improves treatment of genetic disorders at the risk of the results being misused.
To address these complex questions, we need both science and the moral grounding of religion.
We can’t just give a quick answer from the Bible without studying the scientific complexities, nor can we look to science alone to guide ethical decisions.
Christianity and other religions lay the groundwork for the moral standards that are essential for the appropriate use of science and technology.

Science also has a positive impact on the faith of the believer.
The Bible teaches that “The heavens declare the glory of God” (Psalm 19:1).
Christians see God’s glory when looking up at the stars, and in colliding galaxies seen through a telescope.
God’s glory is revealed in the beautiful symmetry of a maple leaf, and in the complex biochemical activity inside each cell in that leaf.
Science and technology have shown us much more of God’s creation than was known in Biblical times, revealing more and more of God’s glory.

Finally, Christianity can provide the belief framework for how and why we do science.
Christians need not set aside their faith when they sit down to do science.

BioLogos의 "Can Science and Scripture Be Reconciled?"

Can Science and Scripture Be Reconciled?

The heavens declare the glory of God...The law of the Lord is perfect, refreshing the soul. Psalm 19:1,7 (NIV)

In Christian belief, God reveals himself in both the written book of the Bible and the created “book” of the natural world. Because of the consistent character of God, these two cannot conflict.
Yet at times they seem to say contradictory things to us about the origin and shape of God’s creation.
What do we do when the results of science disagree with common biblical interpretations?

One response is to say that the Bible is right and science is wrong, but this often elevates a particular biblical interpretation to the authority of the Bible itself.
Scripture is always given and received within a cultural context.
As we attempt to understand the Bible in today’s context, Christians sometimes disagree on the meaning of particular passages.
Some scriptural teachings, like the accounts of Jesus’ death and resurrection, have clear meanings that have been affirmed by the church throughout the centuries and around the world.
Other teachings, like the baptism of adults vs. infants, are ambiguous and their interpretation has been debated for centuries.
Some interpretations have been challenged and changed as Christians re-evaluated them in light of the whole of Scripture (the ownership of slaves serves as a dramatic example).
Church tradition has also been appropriately challenged as new historical or scientific evidence presents itself.
Consider the scientific work of Galileo, which overturned an earth-centered worldview and thus irrevocably affected our interpretation of passages like Psalm 93:1.

Just as the Bible is always interpreted by fallible humans, so too science is the human interpretation of nature.
Thus, its theories are subject to critique and revision.
A good example is the racist ideas of “eugenics” in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, which were rightly questioned by many Bible-believing Christians.
But science also has internal methods for reviewing evidence and weeding out errors (eugenics was eventually rejected by mainstream science).
After theories are tested and refined by many scientists all over the world, they give an ever more reliable interpretation of physical reality.
This is true of many aspects of evolutionary theory, which have been tested and confirmed by numerous scientists in many fields over a long period of time.

Scientific data can sometimes serve as God’s way of warning us when we are standing too close to the scriptural “picture,” or at the wrong angle, or with the wrong expectations.
The purpose of science is not to verify nor to add to inspired Scripture, but science can help us eliminate improper ways of reading it.
Likewise, Christians should thoughtfully and appropriately encourage science to rigorously test its own theories and question its own assumptions, especially when science appears to contradict Scripture.
Yet because they are both means of God’s revelation of himself to us, they must work together towards an ultimate harmony.

How should we interpret the Genesis flood account?

In a Nutshell요약

Genesis 6-9 tells the fascinating story of Noah, the Ark, and the Flood.
Some Christians interpret the text to mean that the biblical flood must have covered the entire globe.
They also work to explain the evidence in rocks and fossils in terms of this world-wide flood.
Other Christians do not feel the text requires that the flood be global, but could have covered the small region of earth known to Noah.
The scientific and historical evidence does not support a global flood, but is consistent with a catastrophic regional flood.
Beyond its place in history, the Genesis flood teaches us about human depravity, faith, obedience, divine judgment, grace and mercy.

Introduction서론

The Genesis Flood of Genesis 6-9 tells a fascinating story.
Sometimes referred to as Noah and the Ark, it is a common fundamentalist claim that the biblical flood must have been a worldwide one, or else Scripture as a whole is undermined.
From this point of view, the flood is often used in an attempt to account for the geologic column, which is otherwise seen as evidence of a very old Earth.
However, a balanced interpretation of Scripture does not force the reader to believe that the Flood was a worldwide phenomenon.
The scientific and historical evidence summarized below supports the idea that the flood was indeed catastrophic, but that it was local, recent and limited in scope.
Beyond its place in history, the Genesis Flood is also a part of the greater narrative of the Bible.
It highlights theological points concerning human depravity, faith, obedience, divine judgment, grace and mercy.

The History of “Flood Geology”

In the 19th century, a growing body of extrabiblical evidence began to undermine the traditional belief in a global flood.
As early as the first half of the 19th century, geologists and theologians Edward Hitchcock, Hugh Miller and the Rev. John Pye Smith viewed this evidence not as a threat to faith, but as an occasion to reach a better understanding of Genesis.
But in the 20th century, George McCready Price, a Seventh-day Adventist from Canada and self-taught amateur geologist, took a less compliant stance and began the modern flood geology movement, which ascribes many features of Earth’s present state to a recent, global flood.
In his book The New Geology, published in 1923, Price explained the Christian fundamentalist perspective of geology, and he did so with such style and sophistication “that readers untrained in geology are generally unable to detect the flaws.”
Others followed Price in the modern flood geology movement, including Byron Nelson, Harold Clark, Alfred M. Rehwinkel, John C. Whitcomb, and Henry M. Morris.

In the 1950s, Bernard Ramm, a baptist theologian and author of The Christian View of Science and Scripture, along with J. Laurence Kulp, a geologist and Plymouth Brethren member, critiqued Price’s book by pointing out critical errors and omissions.
1950년대 감리교 신학자이자 ‘The Christian View of Science and Scripture’의 저자인 Bernard Ramm와 함께 지질학자이자 Plymouth Brethren의 회원인 J. Laurence Kulp는 심각한 오류와 생략을 지적하며 Price의 책을 비평했다.
Ramm, Kulp and others encouraged the American Scientific Affiliation and other organizations not to support flood geology.
In 1961, Young Earth Creationists Henry M. Morris and John C. Whitcomb, Jr. updated Price’s work by writing The Genesis Flood.
This book argued that the creation of the Earth was relatively recent, and that the Fall of Man started the second law of thermodynamics.
The book also claims that Noah’s Flood was global and produced most of the geological strata we see today.
Many regard the work of Morris and Whitcomb to be a major foundational step in the development of modern day creation science, which has since gained a worldwide foothold.

Let us now consider the actual evidence for this position from both the Bible and from science.

A Local Flood

The language used in Genesis 6-9 does not insist that the flood was global.
First of all, the Hebrew kol erets, meaning whole Earth, can also be translated whole land in reference to local, not global, geography.
The Old Testament scholar Gleason L. Archer explains that the Hebrew word erets is often translated as Earth in English translations of the Bible, when in reality it is also the word for land, as in the land of Israel.
Archer explains that erets is used many times throughout the Old Testament to mean land and country.
Furthermore, the term tebel, which translates to the whole expanse of the Earth, or the Earth as a whole, is not used in Genesis 6:17, nor in subsequent verses in Genesis 7 (7:4, 7:10, 7:17, 7:18, 7:19).
If the intent of this passage was to indicate the entire expanse of the Earth, tebel would have been the more appropriate word choice.
Consequently, the Hebrew text is more consistent with a local geography for the flood.

Moreover, in this period of history, people understood the whole Earth as a smaller geographical area.
There is no evidence to suggest that people of this time had explored the far reaches of the globe or had any understanding of its scope.
For example, the Babylonian Map of the World, the oldest known world map, depicts the world as two concentric circles containing sites of Assyria, Babylon, Bit Yakin, Urartu, a few other cities and geographic features all surrounded by ocean.
There are also small, simple triangles that shoot out from the ocean labeled as nagu or uncharted regions.
Contextual evidence also suggests that Greek geographers developed comparable maps during the middle of the first millennium, where Greece was positioned in the middle of a circle surrounded by oceans.
These maps remind us that people were most familiar with the regions surrounding their homelands.
Therefore, to say that something happened in the kol erets –– or referring to "all people" (Genesis 6:13), –– would have been an appropriate way of referring to the entirety of Earth and its population in a manner in which ancient Israelites would have been familiar.
Davis A. Young, author of The Biblical Flood: A Case Study of the Church's Response to Extrabiblical Evidence, sums this up when he states:
‘The Biblical Flood: A Case Study of the Church's Response to Extrabiblical Evidence’의 작가인 Davis A. Young은 아래와 같이 이야기하면서 이것을 정리했다.
"Given the frequency with which the Bible uses universal language to describe local events of great significance, such as the famine or the plagues in Egypt, is it unreasonable to suppose that the flood account uses hyperbolic language to describe an event that devastated or disrupted Mesopotamian civilization — that is to say, the whole world of the Semites?"

Scientific Problems with a Universal Flood

There are a number of practical problems that conflict with the idea of a global flood.

First, a universal flood would have changed the topography of the land.
For example, in the event of a worldwide flood, the Hidekkel, or Tigris, and Euphrates rivers of Genesis 2:14 would have disappeared under layers of flood-laid sedimentary rock.
Instead, the Euphrates is mentioned again in Genesis 15:18, and the Hidekkel is alluded to in Daniel 10:4.
This suggests that the rivers’ integrity was maintained.
Second, it would require an inordinate amount of water to flood the entire Earth.
One popular explanation for this problem is that prior to the flood, the world was watered by mist from a global canopy of water vapor which then condensed, causing the first rains to flood the Earth (Genesis 2:5-6).
However, this explanation is incongruent with archaeological evidence that concludes ancient Mesopotamia — the land of the Tigris and Euphrates — was “an extremely arid environment that necessitated the use of irrigation for successful agriculture.”
Furthermore, the pressure necessary for the condensation of such a large quantity of water would have been fatal for all living creatures.
In fact, a closer look at the Septuagint version of the Old Testament shows that the word for fountain was used in place of the word for mist.
Some modern translations have used similar words like stream and spring.
In either case, the water is said to have risen from the Earth, which makes it more likely that these terms were referring to irrigation canals.

A similar terminology is used in reference to the flood (Genesis 7:11), where “fountains of the great deep burst open, and the floodgates of the sky were opened.”
But when we look closely at the original Hebrew text and consider the use of the words fountains and deep in other passages, it is more likely that the fountains of the deep were also irrigation canals.

Another supposition is that all animals and humans are derived from the survivors on Noah’s Ark.
There are several problems with this idea.
First of all, there is no way that the 2 million known species of animals could have fit onto the ark — not to mention the estimated 10 to 100 million species yet to be discovered.
The dimensions of the Ark were 300 cubits by 50 cubits by 30 cubits (Genesis 6:15).
At 18 inches per cubit, the Ark would have been 450 feet long, 75 feet wide and 45 feet tall.
This was indeed a large ship by the standards of the time, but not nearly large enough to carry such a vast and varied cargo.
Getting all of the animals to fit on the ark, along with the necessary food would not have been feasible.
Some have argued that not all species were included, but only representatives of each type.
Not only would this still represent an improbably great number of creatures, it would also require that the evolution of related species be drastically accelerated after the flood, in order to account for current diversity of species.
Finally, the migration of animals across mountains and oceans is quite difficult to explain.
To make matters worse, there are no traces of animal ancestors along the proposed courses of migration.

These are just a few of the many scientific problems with interpreting Genesis 6-9 as a truly universal flood.
Efforts to find physical evidence of a global flood have failed.
Even some of the most capable Christian researchers, including John Woodward, George Frederick Wright, William Buckland and Joseph Prestwich, all failed in their searches.
Young states, “It is clear now that the evidence they were searching for simply does not exist.”

The Location of the Flood

Assuming that the Flood was local, its location has not yet been precisely determined.
Though excavation of flood deposits in Mesopotamia provides evidence of ancient flooding, there is no evidence that it is unambiguously the biblical flood. Young writes:

"Nevertheless, the stratigraphy of some of the Mesopotamian flood deposits, literature pertaining to Gilgamesh and ancient Sumerian cities, the New Eastern setting of the biblical account, and the obvious affinities of the biblical and Mesopotamian flood traditions all converge to suggest that there may very well have been a catastrophic deluge in the Tigris and Euphrates River valleys that severely disrupted the civilization of that area — a civilization that represented the world to the biblical writer — and it may be that this is what the biblical story is all about."
Scholars still speculate about where a great flood may have occurred in the Near East.
For example, in the 1990s Columbia University geologists William Ryan and Walter Pitman concluded that a massive local flood took place in the area we now know as the Black Sea.
They theorized that when the Ice Age ended and glaciers melted, a wall of seawater surged from the Mediterranean into the Black Sea.
This flood, which may have occurred around 5500 B.C., would fit into the Old Testament timeline of Noah’s Flood.
Robert Ballard, famous for finding the Titanic, led a 1999 expedition with the hope of finding more evidence for this theory.
The expedition revealed an ancient shoreline for the Black Sea, and after radiocarbon dating, the findings supported their hypothesis that a freshwater lake and surrounding manmade structures were in place before the flood.
Conflicts with the Black Sea explanation do exist, however.
For example, 5500 B.C. is too early for Noah to have used metal tools to create the ark, and the location of the Black Sea does not fit the Sumerian and Babylonian accounts of the flood, which strongly suggest that it took place in Mesopotamia.

The location of the flood remains mysterious and of continued interest to modern geologists.

Other Flood Stories

Many flood stories permeate mythology around the world.
At one time these flood stories were thought to be evidence of a global flood; proof that its survivors carried the story with them from the Near East as they spread out around the globe.
It is now clear, however, that the evidence for this claim is lacking.
Some of the most notable compilations of these stories were collected by James Strickling and Byron C. Nelson.
Strickling did a statistical analysis comparing 61 flood stories from around the world.
After comparing their similarities and differences, he concluded that one family of eight people could not have populated the Earth after a worldwide flood catastrophe.
In order to account for the many stories throughout the world, Strickling concludes, “Either catastrophic flooding of global or near-global dimensions occurred more than once, or there were more survivors of the Great Deluge than one crew, or both.”
In 1931 Nelson compiled more than 41 flood stories and found that despite their remarkable similarities, there were also striking differences.
For example, only nine of the 41 stories mention the preservation of animals and only five mention that there was divine favor on those saved from the flood.
With regard to these differences, geologist Dick Fischer writes, “However tempting it might be to attribute all those ancient stories to a one-time global catastrophe to conform with the traditional interpretation of the Genesis Flood, a literal reading of Genesis does not require it, and the unyielding revelations of nature and history disavow it.”

According to the Interpreter’s Dictionary of the Bible, the “Flood stories are almost entirely lacking in Africa, occur only occasionally in Europe, and are absent in many parts of Asia.
They are widespread in America, Australia, and the islands of the Pacific.”
This evidence again raises concerns for the theory that flood stories have all spread from one original source.

Lessons of the Flood

Regardless of the details surrounding the event, there are significant theological lessons to be learned from the Flood narrative.
In the early church, Tertullian, Jerome, Ambrose, Cyril of Jerusalem, and Augustine understood the story of the flood to encourage moral conduct.
For example, Noah can also be used as an example of Christian perseverance, since he had great faith to build the Ark that God commanded (see James 5:11).
Origen, Jerome, Augustine and others also employed other allegorical methods to illustrate Christian principles.
Being conversant with other flood stories from ancient Mesopotamia as well as the general theology of Genesis will also help us understand the point of this story.
The biblical flood is a response by God to the corruption of humanity, save Noah.
The flood waters are not a random punishment, however, but an undoing of creation –– a return to the state of chaos that existed before God gave order (this is described in Genesis 1).
The waters of chaos had been kept at bay by the firmament, the raqia, which is a solid dome above, and by the earth below.
That is how Earth became habitable.
When we read in Genesis 7:11 that the "fountains of the great deep burst open, and the floodgates of the sky were opened", it means that God is letting the barriers give way so that the waters of chaos can crash back down upon the Earth, thus making it uninhabitable again.
In other words, God's intention in this story is to bring Earth back to its state of chaos and start over again, with a new "Adam" (Noah).
We will read throughout scripture that God's plan of "starting over" will culminate in Jesus, the "last Adam" (1 Corinthians 15:45).

Conclusion결론

An informed reading of the Genesis story neither permits nor requires it to be a universal, global flood, and geology does not support a universal reading.
A non-global interpretation does not undermine the lessons learned from the Genesis Flood account that are pertinent to the life of faith.
